Hood props (give your propers to that hood)

Why do I see so many models at shows with hoods propped up with what looks like a scale 2x4 or piece of big diameter black steel pipe?  With all of the raw materials that are available at local hobby shops, craft stores and on line, I can't grasp the reasoning behind this.  Personally, I use polished, soft steel wire that has been cut and bent to fit in a particular location on a particular model.  It might not be prototypical but it looks a lot better than a piece of balsa wood.
