Resurrected Project - ?69 Camaro
I started this Monogram Camaro back in the ‘90s. I was swapping in a Big-Block and putting a C4 Corvette front suspension under the front end.
I machined and made a lot of parts and sub-assemblies before realizing I could not make parts to the level I wanted. Mainly, not having the ability to make small fasteners that would look like they were in scale is the reason I set it aside. I also did not plan out the project as whole, but built it in sub-assemblies learning as I went, but not paying attention to how I would make them all work together. I guess I thought I could just “plug” the new parts into where the original parts went. All fine and dandy… until I made too many changes and lost some mounting points.
So I disassembled much of it and bagged & tagged (thankfully) some of the loose parts. Some ended up in box in my shop. Some (including the body and chassis) sat in a large Frisbee not far from my mill. It is amazing I only lost one piece (that I know of), and found it after only five minutes of looking.
I have decided since I can now make the parts that hindered its progress some 13-14 years ago that it was time to play with it again.
Originally I had planned it to be a mid to late 80’s hot-rodded Camaro. Weekend grudge match racer, possible daily driver, in a similar vein as the way I treated my Camaro back then. Considering what I have done already, I think it wise to continue that path at this point…
Here is the undignified condition of the parts as I began to inventory them today…
I did get some chemical etching on the body, but nothing too bad.
The chassis was missing a brass sub-frame connector. Most of the front suspension was machined out of aluminum.
A brake rotor with no hub, yeah, but it does have a backing plate. I was so into figuring out how to make vented rotors I missed that detail, but then I hadn’t made the wheels yet either…
That rotor just looks wrong, they will have to go, but it was the precursor to how I subsequently made the front rotors on one of the Super Sevens, so it served its purpose in the long run…

Renault R31 ? Launch Details and Analysis (Scarbsf1's Blog)
"What was formerly the Renault F1 Team and now Lotus Renault GP (I?ll use the term LRGP for this article) have unveiled their new car the R31. It seems some critical details are not fitted to the car for its unveiling, indeed the car was shown only briefly to the press before it was covered back up and returned to the garage. Despite the mystery surrounding the cars exhaust exit location, its clear this is a very new design for the team. In creating this the team were given a mandate to take risks, which probably explains the very different front and rear end treatments."
Renault R31 Front Exit Exhausts (FEE) ? Explained (Scarbsf1's Blog)
"Renault have found a new solution to the blown diffuser concept. In fact they?ve turned it on its head. With an exhaust that exits at the front of the sidepods.
Last years teams reintroduced the blown diffuser concept, either by blowing exhaust gasses over the top of the diffuser, or by creating an opening into the diffuser to blow inside the diffuser. Both solutions created more downforce. With the latter solution now banned, it seemed the less effective over-blown solutions are all that?s left to race."

Lotus Evora S Roger Daltrey Edition
Posted on 11.29.2011 12:00 by Kirby |
Lotus has always had the pulse for doing charitable things as they have built numerous special edition models to help raise funds for charities. A few months ago, they built a special Evora called the Freddie Mercury Edition - Mercury was the lead vocalist of Queen - to benefit the Mercury Phoenix Trust Foundation.
Recently, the British automaker went back to that same route by unveiling another special edition Evora S, this time personalized by no less than The Who front man, Roger Daltrey.
With the help of Lotus, Daltrey was given the reins in personalizing this car. In addition to signing the car himself, Daltrey also added in red striping details, as well as a number of "The Who" badges and a Union Jack logo on the tailgate. For their part, Lotus gave the special edition Evora Tech and Premium packages that include a Metallic Black paint finish, a reversing camera, and best of all, a 3.5-liter supercharged V6 engine that produces 345 horsepower.
The Evora Roger Daltrey Edition is set to be auctioned off on December 1, 2011 with proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
"Without teenagers and their energy and passion for music, we wouldn’t have Rock ’n Roll as we know it," Daltrey said. "There is no doubt in my mind that we’re really making a difference."
Interested bidders will need to bring their check books with them because the car is expected to go under the hammer for around 70,000, which is around $93,400 based on current exchange rates.

Marussia Virgin MVR-02 Launch pictures (7th of February)
Marussia Virgin Racing unveiled their 2011 challenger at BBC Television Centre in London on 7th February 2011.
The Virgin MVR-02 is designed by Nick Wirth for the 2011 Formula One season. Like its predecessor, the Virgin VR-01, the MVR-02 is designed entirely with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), with Nick Wirth's Wirth Research design studio doubling their CFD capacity ahead of the 2011 season.
As compared to its predecessor, as well as many of the current F1 challengers , the new MVR-02 presents a lower nose design, while also featuring a tighter rear section. As far as the livery for the 2011 F1 season goes, Virgin's partnership with Marussia Motors reflects in a slightly different color scheme, with some white added to the front of the car's nose. The air intake on the front nose has been designed to resemble the one on Marussia's road car, the Marussia B2.

Virgin MVR-02 ? Exhaust Positioning (Scarbsf1's Blog)
"One detail of note on the car was the exhaust system. Already the buzz word at every launch, the exhaust mates the simpler diffuser to help produce downforce. In Virgins case they have extended the exhausts to blow over the diffuser. Nick Wirth did confirm a Renault style front exit was simulated, but the more conventional approach has been adopted on the launch car at least."

Porsche Design Tower set to be built in Miami
Posted on 11.26.2011 18:00 by Kirby |
We all know that automakers have slowly begun to pay more attention to consumer goods as a way of branching out their business models, but in the case of Porsche Design - Porsche’s styling arm - they might have taken it to a whole new level by diving into real estate development.
No, they’re not building their own theme park like Ferrari did, but they did build a new condominium project in the heart of Miami Beach.
The building is set to be christened the "Porsche Design Tower" and will be a collaborative project between the company and real estate developer Gil Dezer. The new condominium is expected to rise on 2.2 acres of real estate along Collins Avenue in Miami, making up 132 housing units on the 57-story building. One of the most fascinating features of the Porsche Design Tower is the inclusion of three robotic car elevators that will allow you to actually bring your own car up to your condos without, apparently, needing your own basement parking.
We’re more than interested to see how the whole set-up is going to work, but we have neither the car nor the funds to make a play for one of those units, which, we expect, will sell for more than what our bank accounts can handle.
But hey, the whole idea of bringing your car up to your condo unit is pretty sweet in its own right. At the very least, you won’t have to worry about it being stolen in the basement.
