Bernie Ecclestone - No plans to put the brakes on

© Getty Images
In an exclusive interview with the Guardian as his 80th birthday approaches, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone speak out about a variety of subjects, from the future of the sport to Margaret Thatcher, Hitler, Saddam Hussein, democracy, football and what continues to drive him.
The way I feel at the moment, why stop? I do it because I enjoy it. And yesterday is gone. I don't care what happened yesterday. What else would I do? People retire to die. I don't get any individual pleasure because we don't win races or titles in this job. I'm like most business people. You look back at the end of the year and you see what you've achieved by working out how much money the company has made. That's it.

Five ways to improve F1

Emerson Fittipaldi in his heyday © Sutton Images
In an interview in the Times, former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi?s outlined his five-point plan to enhance Formula One. Cut costs ?They spend a fortune in wind-tunnel testing alone. Reduce costs and the slowest teams would catch up and make it more even.? Limit downforce ?They need to reduce enormously the downforce in the cars, the only way to bring back overtaking. We need more mechanical grip so that you have longer braking areas, can set up the car coming out of a corner, get in the slipstream and then overtake.? Close the pitlane ?When the safety car goes out they should close the pitlane. Now it?s just a lottery.? Lift ban on team orders ?It is a very stupid rule. It?s why they are called teams, it?s why they have two cars. If a driver is leading in the championship, everything has to go in his favour. What is wrong with that? It?s so easy for teams to camouflage their orders anyway. All they need to do is tell one guy on the radio he has a problem with his brakes. They can bend the rules very easily. In the old days they would even swap cars, so why do we have this ban now?? Retain traditional grands prix ?These places are the soul of racing. The Americas are under-represented. We have Canada back, but there is no USA, no Argentina, no Mexico. We need to stay in the heartlands.?

I'm about to fit the roof to the body...

This will be a bit of a challenge as I've not done any major bodywork before.

Here's a sketch of my idea for a colour scheme:

Pearl white and metallic leaf green scallops. Green rear glass, green carpet, green/white upholstry, big amps and speakers in the trunk (Made visible by that huge glass roof) Green plug wires, white engine.

Slammed down as low as possible on Pegasus spoked rims.

I'm going to use the custom front grille and tall rear lights. I'll probably fill the  custom-option horizontal rear lights. They don't look right.

I'll need to create something to make the rear glass appear to be hinged as there is nothing in the kit for this. I'll also have to fill the original trunklid shutlines and create new ones for the tailgate. If anyone has built or seen other examples of this version, please let me know. I'd be very interested.

If you have any comments or suggestions, I welcome feedback.

Cheers

1960 Ford Starliner

My new project is a '60 Ford Starliner.  The kit has been in the stash for a few years and it is time to build it.

I am going for a tu-tone paint scheme on this one.  I was originally planning on a white top and green body and interior, but I have decided on a Tamiya TS-26 white top over Model Master Acapolco Blue Metallic body with a Model Master Federal Standard Blue interior.

A few mold lines to content with and then it's off to the paint booth!

More to come...

The Top 10 Cars of The Fast & The Furious

Now that the clock has finally run out and just hours away from the first showing of Fast Five - the fifth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise - we felt like it’s the right time to give proper respect to the characters that have made this movie franchise as fun as it has been since the first movie came out in 2001.

And if you think that we’re talking about resident leading men, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, guess again. This list has very little to do with them, or their other co-stars for that matter, but more so about what they were driving during the first four movies. Yes, dear friends. This is a list to honor the Top 10 cars of the Fast and Furious franchise!

Do take note that we compiled this list based on our opinions so if you have any sort of reaction on the cars we chose and the number we gave them, you have the floor in the comments section to let us hear about it.

'The point of no confidence is quite near'

The wreckage of Jochen Rindt's car at Barcelona © Getty Images
An excellent insight into the world of F1 as it used to be can be found on the regularly-interesting Letters of Note website. It publishes a hitherto unseen letter from Jochen Rindt to Lotus boss Colin Chapman written shortly after Rindt?s crash at Barcelona which was a result of the wing system on Lotus 49 collapsing at speed.
?Colin. I have been racing F1 for 5 years and I have made one mistake (I rammed Chris Amon in Clermont Ferrand) and I had one accident in Zandvoort due to gear selection failure otherwise I managed to stay out of trouble. This situation changed rapidly since I joined your team. ?Honestly your cars are so quick that we would still be competitive with a few extra pounds used to make the weakest parts stronger, on top of that I think you ought to spend some time checking what your different employes are doing, I sure the wishbones on the F2 car would have looked different. Please give my suggestions some thought, I can only drive a car in which I have some confidence, and I feel the point of no confidence is quite near.?
A little more than a year later Rindt's Lotus suffered mechanical breakdown just before braking into one of the corners. He swerved violently to the left and crashed into a poorly-installed barrier, killing him instantly.

Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 "Kowalski Edition"

A lot of us may be too young to remember the glory days of auto movies in the 70s, but for those old enough to remember a movie called Vanishing Point starring Barry Newman, this little tuning project may be if interest. In the movie, Newman plays the role of Kowalski, man who makes some sort of bet that he could take a white 1970 Dodge Challenger and drive it all the way the from Colorado to San Francisco in just 15 hours. Apparently, Vanishing Point was one of the most iconic car movies of the era, having enjoyed cult status to its fans, including one Bob Frederick.

As the dealer of New Wilmington Dodge and a long-time fan of the movie, Frederick decided to do something really cool to pay homage to one of his favorite flicks by unveiling a special edition model of the 392 Inaugural Edition Dodge Challenger SRT8 and calling it the ?Kowalski Edition?.

1970 Dodge Challenger T/A - Revell's Streetburner

Hi fellow modelers!

This will be my first W.I.P here. I'm already working in this model for a few weeks, but only now I decided to take some pictures of it.

I'm talking about the Revell's 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A. According to the kit's manual it has a 340 cu. in. small block V8 engine with three 2-barrel carbs.

After some google images research, I decided to paint it yellow, most preciselly the Model Master Yellow PY3, a spray lacquer. The can's instructions recommend that this paint "may be clear coated in 2 hours" after the paint application. But I have some questions:

1. Can I use the Testors Glosscoat # 1261 over this paint? This is the only one I have now.

2. Should I polish the paint before I apply the clearcoat? It seems that I have some orange peel on the paint, I don't know if you can notice on the pictures below.

3. And about the decals, when should I apply them? Before or after the clearcoat?

Thanks in advance,

Starr

Porsche Panamera 4S by Schmidt Revolution

We?ve gotten accustomed to some pretty intense tuning work done on the Porsche Panamera so it was a little surprising that the latest aftermarket company to make a program for the sports sedan erred on the side of subtlety.

German tuner, Schmidt Revolution, used a Panamera 4S for its latest work, using a software optimization to bump up the output of the sport saloon?s 4.8-liter V8 engine from 400 horsepower and 368 lb/ft of torque up to 425 horsepower and 394 lb/ft of torque. Schmidt Revolution also lowered the car?s ride height by 40mm while also putting in a set of 22? alloy wheels wrapped in 265/30 R22 tires at the front and 305/25 R22 tires at the back. According to the German tuning company, an elaborate interior program, complete with bespoke leathers and trim, is also in the woodwork, although details are being withheld for a later date.

From what we know, pricing for the disclosed options are as follows: ?990 ($1,443) for the engine upgrade, ?390 ($568) for the suspension module, and ?4,900 ($7,141) for the wheel-and-tire set-up.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted as more details of Schmidt Revolution’s program for the Porsche Panamera become available.
